Alongside a good diet and the occasional natural supplement, if necessary, I always recommend my clients practice meditation. Just a few minutes a day can significantly improve physical health conditions.

Here’s one important reason why meditation is important for optimum physical health

Our nervous system is the master controller of our body systems. It regulates all our functions, with support from our endocrine system which is our hormones and natural chemical messengers.

Our nervous system tells our heart how fast or how hard to beat, tells our lungs to breathe, tells our digestive systems when to digest food, tells our brains how happy we are feeling. We have nerves in every part of our body, from the tips of our fingers and toes to the chambers of our heart. So our nervous system affects every part of our body. If our nervous system gets out of balance, so does our physical health.

Apart from reducing stress, why is meditation good for physical health?

The nervous system

The nervous system is divided into sections. The central nervous system is comprised of the brain and spinal cord, and this is the control centre. We also have the sympathetic and parasympathetic parts of the nervous system and these are the parts that can really affect our bodily functions and negatively impact our health when we are stressed. The sympathetic nervous system is activated when we are stressed. As you can see in this diagram, it inhibits the activity of the digestive system.

The Impact of Stress

So, if someone is stressed a lot or dealing with a lot of emotions, this can mean they will develop problems with their digestion. Whereas, the parasympathetic nervous system is the part that is activated when we are relaxed and at peace. Therefore, someone who doesn’t get stressed out a lot, will have much better digestion.

The digestive system is the key to our physical health

As the digestive system is the key to our physical health and where we absorb nutrients from our food, if we have good digestion , our bodies and organs and cells will receive the nutrition they need and be much more healthy.

If we eat a great diet and take lots of supplements and herbs, but are chronically stressed and sympathetic nervous system dominant, we aren’t going to absorb those nutrients and our health will continue to suffer.
