Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of the digestive tract. Irritable bowel disease (IBD) is inflammation or ulceration of the walls of the intestines which can lead to destruction of parts of the bowel. Whilst both of these conditions have similar symptoms, the causes and diagnosis are very different. If your doctor suspects you have Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis , you will be asked to have a blood test or give a stool sample to inform the diagnosis.

IBS directly affects the lower gastrointestinal area, including the small intestine, large intestine, and colon. You will experience diarrhoea, constipation and some days both. Bouts of gassiness, bloating and abdominal cramping may be a familiar part of your life. Symptoms may also be experienced further-up your digestive tract, including indigestion in the stomach and acid reflux into the oesophagus.

You may have tried medications such as Buscopan, Mebeverine, Colofac or Peppermint Oil. Sometimes these might relieve the symptoms for a while, but they return. You may have tried cutting out different foods, but you don’t know which ones, if any, you are sensitive to. You might wish you could eat the foods you enjoy, but worry about how they will make you feel afterwards.

I have 14 years’ experience treating patients with a variety of digestive disorders, including IBD and IBS. I have successfully helped sufferers of IBS eradicate their symptoms, return to normal bowel function and be able to eat the foods they enjoy in a balanced and healthy way.

I create a health protocol that is specific and unique to each patient. We are all individuals. We have different characteristics, personalities, lifestyles and also different dietary needs too. Causes of IBS vary from person-to-person. Acquired food intolerances, gut dysbiosis caused by antibiotics or medications, stress, allergies, illnesses and emotional trauma can all affect gut function. So, first I take a full case history to learn about your health, diet and lifestyle. Usually patients that come to me for help with their IBS need 3 appointments, spread over 2-3 months. First, we temporarily eliminate particular foods you may have become intolerant to, that are barriers to your healing. I also recommend specific supplements to target cellular repair in your intestines and digestive system. I don’t supply any products myself, so you can trust I am giving impartial advice. All products I recommend are available from reputable retailers. Your third stage of treatment, now that your body is healing and balance is restored in your digestive system, is to reintroduce foods. We do this within the boundaries of what your body is comfortable with. You will feel empowered, knowing how to stay healthy and balanced whilst being able to eat the foods you enjoy.
