Selena (name changed) came to me with terrible PMS symptoms. For a week prior to her period, she was incredibly emotional, feeling overwhelmed and like she couldn’t cope with day-to-day life. Then she would develop abdominal cramps that kept her awake at night and didn’t respond to over-the counter pain relief medications. When her period came, it was really heavy for two days, then would almost cease, only to come back again a day or so later. Even once her period started, her breasts were still sore and swollen and she found it difficult not to cry and feel depressed about things that bothered her.

How we improved Selena’s PMS

Every consultation with my clients is different. We are all unique beings with our own life history, experiences, physical characteristics and personalities with different requirements and reactions to our internal and external environment.

In Selena’s consultation, I used kinesiology testing to identify that dairy was creating inflammation in her body and disrupting her hormonal balance. Selena is a vegetarian and disclosed she cycled regularly and ate a lot of cheese and milk to maintain her protein and calorie intake. We reduced her dairy intake by introducing some alternative sources of vegetable protein meals and snacks that she could pack in her rucksack when she was out for the day. I recommended some anti-inflammatory foods that also have hormonal balancing effects.

Painful and Emotional Premenstrual Symptoms Case Study

I put Selena on a Multi Vitamin and Mineral supplement specifically designed for menstruating women to bring her body levels of nutrients up to optimum levels. From her description of her period stopping and starting, I determined that progesterone imbalances rather than oestrogen were the root of Selena’s menstrual pain. I created a tailor-made herbal blend to regulate her progesterone levels.

Progesterone maintains the lining of the womb just before menses begins, in-preparation for a fertilised egg arriving. The progesterone imbalance was also affecting her cortisol levels which led to her emotional lows and feelings of being overwhelmed. Sex hormones and adrenal hormones are all steroid hormones that come from the same ‘godmother’ hormone base.

A chronic sex hormone imbnlanace can also impact the adrenal hormones and vice-versa. I also advised Selena to take a combination of essential fatty acids that reduce inflammation which caused her breast soreness.

By the time her next period arrived, Selena wasn’t experiencing abdominal pain or such sore breasts. Within 8 weeks, her symptoms had completely resolved. She didn’t experience menstrual cramps, breast soreness or emotional lows.

This was how I helped Selena, however everyone is different. What works for one isn’t necessarily right for another. I often receive clients who have spent a fortune on herbal supplements they read about in magazines and on the internet, but their symptoms have not improved. This is because those supplements weren’t the right ones for them.
